Getting Started

All schools are asked to designate a School Site Volunteer Coordinator. All volunteer work must be done under the direction of an assigned teacher, site volunteer coordinator, principal or vice principal. Volunteers must comply with the district’s volunteer screening requirements.

Community members interested in volunteering should:

  1. Comply with appropriate volunteer screening requirements.
  2. Complete and return a school volunteer application to the site and/or department of interest.
  3. Read and acknowledge understanding of the Volunteer Code of Conduct.
  4. Provide Adult Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment Questionnaire OR results of Tuberculin skin test.

Complete the Volunteer Clearance packet and submit it to the office.

Opportunities at the School Level

School Site Council (SSC)

The SSC is an elected decision-making group comprised of parents, community members, site administrators, teachers and other staff. At the secondary level, students are included. The SSC has an ongoing responsibility to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate the site plan. The SSC also oversees all the categorical funds such as Title 1, Second Language and GATE.

Site Governance Team (SGT)

Each school has a SGT to act as its advisory body on issues other than major categorical programs.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

Schools that have twenty-one or more English as a Second Language (ESL) students also have an English Learner Advisory Committee. It serves as the advisory body to the school on four key issues:

  • The school plan for English learners
  • Needs assessment
  • Administration of the language census
  • Efforts to make parents aware of the importance of attendance
