Meet our Principal, Mrs. Darius Ashton

Mrs. Ashton grew up in San Diego and attended San Diego Unified School District schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, including Fremont, Grant, Gompers, and Point Loma High School. She graduated from San Diego State University and began her career as an elementary school teacher, teaching multiple grade levels. She has been with San Diego Unified School District for over 20 years.
One of her most impactful roles was serving in the central office as a resource teacher, where she supported the rollout of i21 technology classrooms. Her passion for technology integration led to the development of a districtwide initiative to establish Digital Teacher Leaders at every school site. She later served four years as Vice Principal at Wangenheim Middle School, where she supported staff professional development, prioritized student safety, and deepened her understanding of middle school operations and the social-emotional needs of adolescents.
Mrs. Ashton is committed to inclusive practices and works closely to support students with diverse learning needs, including those in Special Education. The 2025–2026 school year marks her 9th year as principal of Ericson Elementary and her 13th year serving as an administrator in the Mira Mesa community.
Mrs. Ashton is married with two children, and her family enjoys sailing, surfing, and traveling. She comes from a family of educators—her mother taught in the Sweetwater Union High School District, and her sister is part of the Instructional Technology coaching team in SDUSD.
Mrs. Ashton is honored to serve the Ericson Elementary community. Through her years in Mira Mesa, she has built strong relationships with families and remains committed to strengthening those partnerships. As both a principal and a parent, she understands the importance of collaboration between home and school and is dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-achieving learning environment for all students and staff.
